  • In this letter of December 24, 1862, A.T. Davidson writes to Jacob Siler with instructions for reimbursement of a coffin purchase for Rufus and giving his thoughts on the war.
  • A.T. Davidson to Jacob Siler, December 24, 1862 Murphy N.C. Dec. 24th 1862 Jacob Siler Esq Dear Sir Yours of the 16th was recd by last mail but to late to answer by that return mail. If you have letters of ads I suppose that will be all you will have to present, or 2 [?] other a certified copy of the record showing your appointment with the seal of the country. If Rufus had not been an officer a declaration on your part in form [?] would have been necessary – but the Dept. has in cases of the claims of officers held that their must an administration. For the monies expended you will have to procure the receipts of the party from whom he bought the coffins- and present it to the quarter master of the 39th Regt for payment. and then if it is not paid it will have to be presented to the Quarter Master Genl in the nature of an official. so you had best get some friend to attend to this who belongs to the Regt. The other [?] I can said [?] will attend to promptly and chearfully. you must get the record and send to me at Richmond. whether I will start on next Sunday week ___ of Knoxville. I saw the “individual” when at A. last summer but did not mention the subject for fear that I might be thought obtusient [obstinate?]. I spent two days with the Gov at Raleigh and the subject was slightly hinted at. The only ____ mentioned from him that he neglected their should have been misunderstanding or disappoint ment. this was all. I have no doubt with a prudent and cautious effort on the part of friends that all things could be made right. We must have peace in some way. without it we and our children are ruined [?] are you not delighted with the election of our old time honored leader and find W.A. Grahams’. I think it __________ of “a better day a coming” he is decidedly the greatest man of the age in my opinion. and will live on in the memory of the would. when the carping and whining of such cross road politicians as Dr. & N W Woodfins shall be consigned to the hand of the moles and Bats in their desolate dens and grottos. I am greatly sated with the news from the Rappahannock I think this is the decisive battle – and my prediction is that we will start ca___ in peace – for this may be mis_______ but every thing indicates a termin- -ation of the strugle in some way and I think honorable to us tho European news looks this way, and I shall be greatly desappointed if there are not times for negotiations in a short time Yours truly A.T.
